How it works
VAT is the net amount multiplied by the VAT rate. With withholding, part of that VAT (e.g. 5/10) is paid by the buyer directly to the tax office. The seller collects only the rest, and the buyer pays the seller the net amount plus the remaining VAT. Which ratio applies depends on the type of work, so check the regulations or your accountant.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a gross amount?
Divide by (1 + rate). 1,200 including 20% VAT is 1,000 net plus 200 VAT.
What is VAT withholding?
Part of the VAT is paid to the tax office by the buyer instead of the seller. The share is written as a fraction like 2/10, 5/10 or 9/10.
What does the buyer pay on such an invoice?
The net amount plus (VAT − withheld VAT) to the seller. The withheld part goes to the tax office with the buyer’s own return.
